Hanging Pawns

Two friendly pawns side-by-side on adjacent files with no neighbor support.

Why it matters

Hanging pawns are two friendly pawns side by side with no pawns on the files either side of them. They are strong while they stand together, controlling four squares in front of them, and weak the moment one of them is forced to move.

They are the same bargain as the isolated pawn, doubled: activity in exchange for something to defend. The side that has them wants to push one at the right moment; the side facing them wants to make one advance at the wrong one.

See it on a board

White's c4 and d4 pawns have no neighbours: the b- and e-files are empty of White pawns. Side by side they take four squares; move one, and the other is on its own.

Checked: the position really has the feature described.

How to play it

  1. Keep them abreast. Two pawns on the same rank cover the squares in front of each other.
  2. Time the advance of one of them to open lines while your pieces are ready, not when you are forced.
  3. Against them, pile up on both files, so that any advance leaves a pawn that no other pawn defends.

At each level

The same idea, said the way it is taught at each age.

Rook · ages 6–9

Two pawns side by side with nothing beside them are strong together and weak apart. Do not advance one without a reason.

Queen · ages 8–11

The critical move is almost always d5 or c5. Calculate it properly: if it opens lines for the pieces you have developed, it is the plan; if not, it is the weakness the opponent has been waiting for.

What goes wrong

  • Advancing one pawn to gain a tempo and leaving the other permanently weak.
  • Attacking them with pieces on only one file, so the defender never has to make a decision.

Questions people ask

Are hanging pawns better or worse than an isolated pawn?
They are more flexible and easier to defend, because for now they defend each other. They also cover more space. The risk is the same: one wrong advance and you are left with a weakness rather than a spearhead.
