Hanging pieces: the cheapest way to lose a game

A piece is hanging when it is undefended and inside the opponent's attack range. Most games below master level are decided by hanging pieces, not deep combinations.

Loose pieces also make every other tactic work: forks, discoveries and skewers almost always end by collecting something that was undefended.

The bishop on d5 has no defender and the knight on c3 attacks it. Nxd5 simply wins a piece.

Frequently asked questions

Is a defended piece ever still hanging?
Effectively yes, if the attackers outnumber the defenders or the defenders are worth more than the attackers.
How do I stop hanging pieces?
Build the habit of scanning all your undefended pieces every move. It is the highest-value habit in club chess.
