Overloaded defenders: one piece doing two jobs

A defender is overloaded when it is the only guard of two different squares or pieces. Attack one, and the other is abandoned.

Overload is the quiet cousin of removing the defender: instead of taking the defender off the board, you simply give it an impossible job.

Black's queen on d7 is the only defender of both the knight on d5 and the bishop on g4. White takes one, and the other falls.

Frequently asked questions

How is overload different from a fork?
A fork creates two new threats. Overload exploits two duties that already exist.
Can a pawn be overloaded?
Yes, and it is common: a single pawn often guards two squares in front of the king.
