Promotion tactics: turning a pawn into the decisive piece

A pawn on the seventh rank is a queen waiting to happen. Tactics around promotion usually consist of deflecting the one piece watching the queening square.

Underpromotion matters more than beginners expect: promoting to a knight can give check and fork, and promoting to a rook can avoid stalemate.

a8=Q makes a new queen immediately — nothing controls the promotion square.

Frequently asked questions

When should I underpromote?
When a knight comes with check or a fork, or when a rook avoids stalemate. Otherwise take the queen.
Can I have more than one queen?
Yes. Every promoted pawn becomes any piece you choose, regardless of what is already on the board.
