Smothered mate: the knight mate the king cannot escape
Smothered mate is delivered by a knight against a king that is surrounded entirely by its own pieces. Nothing can block a knight check, so the game ends instantly.
The classic route is Philidor's Legacy: queen check, king to the corner, knight check, king back, queen sacrifice on g8 to force the rook onto that square, then the knight mates on f7.

How to spot it
- Look for an enemy king in the corner with its own rook next to it.
- Check whether a knight can reach f7, f2, g6 or g3 with support.
- A queen sacrifice that forces a piece onto the king's last escape square is the signature move.
Practise this pattern

Start the exercisesHow to defend against it
- Create luft before the knight arrives.
- Move the rook off the corner square when a knight is jumping toward g5 or e5.
- Watch for the queen check on the a2-g8 diagonal that starts the whole sequence.
Common mistakes
- Playing the knight check in the wrong order and allowing the king to escape via f8.
- Trading off the knight that was the whole point of the attack.
Frequently asked questions
- What is Philidor's Legacy?
- The classic forced sequence — Qb3+/Qe6+ ideas, Nf7+, Nh6+ double check, Qg8+ sacrifice, Nf7 mate — that produces a smothered mate.
- Can any piece other than a knight give smothered mate?
- No. Only a knight can check a king whose neighbouring squares are all occupied.
